Think Like a Strategist: Why Great Marketing Starts with Purpose

One of the most valuable skills as a strategic marketer is being able to quantify your choices.

Knowing how to be strategic in your marketing involves understanding what you did, why you did it, and what you expect to happen —all of this is part of thinking and talking about marketing as purposeful, not just arts and crafts.

You can be doing beautiful work and it can be performing well, but if you’re unable to explain what you did and why you did it, you’re not thinking strategically like a strategic marketer should.

But this isn’t a death sentence, because it can be learned. AndIf you want to learn how to be a strategic marketer then, by god’s eye, you should learn it.

Here’s the first step: start with your goal for the work and your objectives for the audience. What do you want them to do, feel, think, and say after experiencing your work? What outcomes do you expect?

With your goal in hand, congratulations, by the way, you’ve just made strategic decisions; now, develop your plan to achieve those outcomes and consider how to be a strategic marketer in all your engagements.

From there, experiment your arse off. Learn from all of it.

If it sounds scientific, congratulations again; you’re figuring out how this marketing thing works best.
